Blackout In Abuja, Others As Protesting Electricity Workers, NUEE Shuts Transmission Station In Kaduna
The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) has shut down operations at the Kaduna Regional Headquarters of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), leading to blackout in the state, the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, and adjoining North-West states.
The electricity union is protesting the non-payment of outstanding arrears owed to former workers of the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), suspension of conditions of service and career path for workers and the directive by the TCN board to conduct promotion interviews for acting principal managers who are moving to Assistant General Managers.
The development which also affected four northwestern states, Kaduna, Kebbi, Sokoto and Zamfara, is said to be in line with the directive of the union’s national leadership.
NUEE officials were said to have forced workers out of the company’s premises before locking the gate with their own key after they picketed the Mando TCN Station in the Kaduna State capital on Wednesday.
They however, vowed not to resume work until all their demands were met by the Federal Government.
The NUEE had picketed the Abuja National Headquarters of the TCN on Tuesday.
According to a circular by the General Secretary of NUEE, Joe Ajaero, titled “Call for Action”, to the Senior Assistant General Secretaries and Zonal Organising Secretaries dated August 15, 2022, the union directed that the electricity workers should ensure total compliance with the directive.
This is coming amid erratic power supply being experienced across the nation and at least five National Power Grid failures already recorded this year.
